UK Government Women and Equalities Committee Inquiry on Unequal impact: Coronavirus (Covid-19) and the impact on people with protected characteristics
April 2020
The Women and Equalities Committee launched an inquiry to understand the different and disproportionate impact that the Coronavirus – and measures to tackle it – has had on people with protected characteristics under the Equality Act.Justice Studio’s response is evidenced by our primary research with older people during lockdown, as well as an evidence synthesis of existing research on race and medicine. We outline key concerns related to 1) age and 2) race/ethnicity and the unequal impact of Covid-19 and secondary effects of lockdown measures on these groups. For older people, this includes the interrelated issues of social isolation and loneliness. With regard to black and minority ethnic groups, we highlight the ways discriminatory social structures materialise in unequal health outcomes. Click here to read more
Human Rights (Joint Committee) Inquiry into the UK Government’s response to COVID-19: human rights implications.
July 2020
Justice Studio’s response sets out our opinions and evidence from a collaborative research project with Solace Women’s Aid and the University of Greenwich on domestic violence during the COVID-19 lockdown. The disproportionate impact that lockdown measures implemented by the British government had on the number of cases of domestic abuse among women calls for the need for policymakers to consult domestic abuse charities and incorporate them in the design of COVID-19 response and recovery plans to ensure that measures taken are human rights compliant.
